Justin Vieth
Most enclosure problems start in the gaps between design, analysis, and construction. I started Northwest Enclosure Consulting so project teams get design review, building-science modeling, and field verification from one senior consultant who follows the enclosure from the first detail to the finished building.
Experience Across Design, Modeling, and the Field
Over the last decade I have reviewed enclosure drawings, specifications, and submittals for wood- and steel-framed multifamily buildings across Oregon and Washington, refining details so they are buildable and perform as intended. In the field, I have observed mockups and installations at each stage of the enclosure, documented deficiencies with clear corrective recommendations, and run window water and leak investigation tests. I have also modeled thermal bridging and moisture risk for architects and design teams on projects across North America.
My construction knowledge started on the job site. I spent ten summers running heavy equipment and working as a laborer for my father's excavation company, and I remodeled the entire second floor of my own home. I know what it takes to build the details I review.
I hold a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering from Iowa State and a Master of Architecture from the University of Oregon. That pairing shapes how I work: I see an enclosure both as an architect draws it and as an engineer analyzes it, so my recommendations respect the design intent and the physics of heat, air, and moisture.
Where I've Worked
- Building Science SpecialistROCKWOOL
Three-dimensional thermal analysis of cladding attachment systems in HEAT3, WUFI hygrothermal modeling, thermal and moisture reports for designers, technical bulletins, peer reviews, and CAD construction details.
- Building Science ConsultantMorrison Hershfield · Portland
Served as the enclosure consultant from design review through construction. Reviewed drawings, specifications, submittals, and RFIs, attended OAC meetings, wrote field observation reports, and performed window water tests, sealant pull tests, and leak investigation testing.
- Home Performance ConsultantGreenSavers · Portland
Performed energy audits, designed weatherization and HVAC projects, and managed their delivery, translating building-science principles into clear recommendations that helped homeowners make informed decisions.
- Architectural InternAnkrom Moisan Architects · Portland
Produced drawing sets and contributed to project design. Managed construction administration for 10th & Belmont, a five-building development on a Portland superblock. Co-led design on Vancouver Waterfront Block 6, one of the first buildings to go up in Vancouver's new waterfront district.
- Equipment Operator and LaborerVieth Construction Corporation
Ten summers operating bulldozers, excavators, skid steers, front-end loaders, rollers, and dump trucks, and working as a laborer on roads, parking lots, bridge abutments, and pipe installation.
Clear Reports, Fast Turnaround, No Surprises
- Prompt reports after every visit, with photos, locations, and a recommended correction for each item.
- Findings everyone can act on. Written so contractors, owners, and architects are all on the same page.
- Flexible fees. Fixed fee, unit price, or time and materials, structured around the project and the client's needs.
- Independent. A third-party view of the enclosure, with no stake in the products or the installation, so every recommendation serves the building.
